TYLER
It's amazing how quickly a feeling of elation can vanish. In less than forty steps, it seems. My mood has plunged from the high of a few moments ago, stealing a quick kiss from Daly at the café, to now, standing in front of the clinic.
I take a few fortifying breaths and look up at the clear, blue sky. It's a beautiful spring day, with the promise of a new summer not too far away. But not even the good weather can clear my rapidly darkening mood.
How is it that I love animals so much, but absolutely dread stepping foot inside this building? It's as if I've crossed some invisible line. I've had one too many bad experiences and gone over the tipping point. I honestly don't think I can keep doing this, hence why I've been dropping out of shifts. I feel terrible about it, but right now, as I near the front door of the clinic, I actually do feel like I'm going to throw up.
I don't even have any surgeries booked today, so barring an emergency or something unexpected popping up last minute, I only have to get through a short shift of consults, and then I'll be free to wander the forty or so steps back into the safe haven of the café. That thought is the only thing that will get me through the next few hours.
I'm also tired. I stayed up late last night. My mind wouldn't settle after Daly left. A lot of heavy stuff was said, plus some amazing stuff, plus I was riding an unbeaten three-streak post-Monopoly championship high.
Bishop turned in not long after Daly left since he had an early start today. I stayed up talking with Fulton until midnight. It gave me the chance to tell him all the things I wanted to about the experience he had shared with us. I told him how he was so strong and brave for surviving what he's been through and how much I admired him for that.
He thanked me, but he's got no way of knowing just how much he really has inspired me. I'm getting closer to being able to tell Daly my deepest, darkest secret. I can feel it. Something is shifting in me, and I'm on the brink of bringing myself to do it. Not because I have to, and certainly not because Daly would ever pressure me into it, but because for the first time since it happened, I actually want to.
Fulton mentioned that he and Bishop are going away to an all-male resort this summer. Fulton plans to take his shirt off and sunbathe by the pool. When I didn't understand the significance of that, he clarified that he's never done that before. Something as simple as being able to slip off a shirt at the pool or at the beach is, understandably, a huge deal for him.
If Fulton can do that, I know I have it in me to be honest with Daly.
I muster up my best game face and head inside, hoping Gus doesn't realize I'm arriving a few minutes late.
